The Modest Fashion industry is set to grow $368 billion by 2021 according to Global Islamic Economy report. It is currently the biggest trend in the fashion industry, with Somali-American model Halima Aden gracing the cover of Vogue Magazine in a headscarf, and walking several international Fashion Week catwalks.
The term modest fashion refers to the fashion trend of wearing less skin-revealing clothes, loose clothing, and covering of the body according to person's own comfort and religious beliefs.
Luxury fashion houses like Dolce & Gabbana now sell Abayas (simple, loose over-garment, essentially a robe-like dress), and fashion houses like DKNY, Michael Kors, and Zara launched Ramadan collections. Big brands houses can no longer ignore the strong spending power from Gulf countries, and now have catered towards modest fashion in the region and the western world.
Through social media, Muslim women have shared fashion trends, make-up styles and ways to style a headscarf, which created a large online community, echoing that fashion and religion can mix.
Instagram influencers like Kuwaiti Instagram blogger, Ascia, who now has an audience of 2.3million, was one of the first women in Kuwait to share photographs of her self, citing a lot of criticism in Kuwait. Now, she is a positive example to young Muslim women, proving that you can be a successful working mother of two with the support of her husband and family. Ascia collaborates with fashion brands like German fashion house Aigner, Dior, MAC make up, and Tory Burch to name a few .
